Breast Augmentation: What You Should Know

Self-confidence and satisfaction about your physical appearance effect the way you perceive yourself and how you interact with others. You may feel self conscious of your size, shape or how you look in clothing.

Have you ever considered breast augmentation? Would changing your bust size give you a boost? Many women have found that by restoring or creating fullness and shape in their breasts, enhancement of self-esteem, sense of well being and femininity can be achieved.

In 2003, over 254,000 women had breast augmentation in the United States. If you are considering having this procedure done, you need to understand the various options regarding the type of implant, the incision site and the placement of the implant.

Most women have breast augmentation because they desire enlargement of their breasts. After pregnancy, some women feel their breast size is too small; they may request a breast lift or balancing the different sizes of their breasts . Regardless of why you want the procedure done, your choice to have breast augmentation is a personal one. It is a choice that only you can make. Get the facts and see if breast augmentation is right for you. Choose an experienced plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The number of breast augmentation surgeries that the plastic surgeon has performed should be considered. If you have friends or colleagues who have had breast augmentation, they might recommend a qualified physician. Contacting the American Society of Plastic Surgeons at their website at www.plasticsurgery.org will provide you with information on qualified surgeons in your area.

At your consultation, your surgeon will provide you with various surgical suggestions on what current techniques are available. Your body profile will be reviewed and discussed, as well as the present size and shape of your breasts and what size you wish to have, in order to select the best enhancement for you.

There are several specific questions you may wish to ask your plastic surgeon concerning: incision sites, whether you are a candidate for saline or silicone implants; and whether implant placement should be above or below the muscle.

The three most common incision areas are: (1) Periareolar - around the dark skin surrounding the nipple; (2) Transaxillary - the armpit area; and (3) Inframammary - where the breast meets the chest.

Saline implants are filled by injecting salt water (saline) from a syringe into tubing connected to the implant. The tubing is disconnected after it is filled to the appropriate size, sealing the implant and then removed from the body.

Determine the correct implant size before surgery is very important. "Trying on "implants filled with various amounts of saline and observing the result with the implants under clothing is very effective. This is an excellent way for the patient to communicate her desired size to her surgeon.

Breast augmentation can be a very rewarding experience physically and emotionally. Be in absolute agreement with your surgeon on what look and size you expect.

The Perfect Introduction to Cosmetic Surgery: BOTOX®

Have you considered improving your appearance but are not sure how to do it?

Have you thought about having cosmetic surgery but don't want a "big procedure?"

BOTOX® is just the answer for you! BOTOX® without question is the fastest growing procedure performed by cosmetic surgeons. It is often the first step for someone considering cosmetic surgery for facial lines but who is not quite committed to or yet in need of a surgical procedure.

BOTOX® simply relaxes the lines away! BOTOX® weakens certain facial muscles which through repetitive use over the years cause lines, wrinkles, and furrows.

It is particularly useful to reverse "frown lines" in the forehead, creases between the eyebrows and "crow's feet" wrinkles around the eyes.

BOTOX® is administered by an injection which causes only mild discomfort and the entire procedure is completed in minutes.

There is no need for a local or topical anesthetic. You can return to work the same day; in fact, the injections often are given during lunch breaks. The beneficial effects are apparent in three to four days and last an average of four to six months.

The results are dramatic! You will be thrilled with your appearance and there's no "recovery" time! BOTOX® also becomes less frequently needed, because your face learns how to express itself without overly using muscles.

So, when should you first start using BOTOX®? There is no minimum age - it depends more on your amount of wrinkling and how much it bothers you. Most women who come in for BOTOX® are in their thirties or early forties.

But if you're starting to develop lines due to facial expressions as early as your twenties, obviously the sooner you begin the better chance you will have to avoid them.

And BOTOX® is completely safe. It has been used for years for cosmetic purposes and for decades for other medical purposes. Originally used for eye doctors to relieve eye spasms and crossed eyes, doctors started to notice their patients also experienced decreased wrinkling - and a phenomenal cosmetic treatment was born!

You should always inquire about your doctor's experience with BOTOX®. In skilled hands, BOTOX® should enhance your facial expression while removing unwanted wrinkles.

Eat Smart to Look and Feel Great

We've all heard that fruits and vegetables are good for us, that restaurant portions are too big and that we should exercise more.   But looking around one sees that two out of three Americans are over weight or obese.   The incidence of Type II diabetes among children is climbing.

The rewards of a healthy life style are worth the effort.   Studies show that 80% of heart disease and 90% of diabetes can be tied to unhealthy eating and life style habits.    Doctors have proved that a diet emphasizing fruits and vegetables, as well as small amounts of nuts and dairy products can lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol as effectively as many medications.   Adding fiber to your diet and avoiding highly refined foods can help prevent or delay the onset of Type II diabetes.

Ten Power Foods

  1. Tomatoes
  2. Spinach
  3. Salmon
  4. Blueberries
  5. Green Tea
  6. Oats
  7. Red Wine (only if you already drink moderately)
  8. Almonds (or walnuts)
  9. Olive Oil
  10. Soy

Can Food Really Slow the Aging Clock?

Yes, it can.   Foods that are rich in antioxidants-antiaging foods - contribute to longevity.

Examples of antioxidant foods are berries, traditional soy foods, olive oil, salmon, pomegranate, purple cabbage, watercress, tomatoes and ground flax.

Evidence supports the recommendation of eating five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day.   Example of daily fruit and vegetable diet is:

Serving 1 - 1 banana

Serving 2 - ½ cup blueberries

Serving 3 - ¾ cup orange juice

Serving 4 - 1 medium apple

Serving 5 - ½ cup steamed broccoli

Serving 6 - ½ cup red, green, orange or yellow pepper

Serving 7 - 6 oz glass tomato juice

Serving 8 - Handful green beans ½ cup

Serving 9 - 2 raw scallions

Eaten over the course of the day, you can see that it is not as difficult as you might think!

The latest scientific research has shown that the plant kingdom is filled with gifts that can help fight off the ravages of chronic disease and keep us healthy. A large group of compounds called phytochemcals found in plants, ranging from garlic to cabbage to tea leaves have been shown to help fight disease by preventing cellular damage caused by chemicals called free radicals.

Secrets of Portion Control

Americans are eating too much.   We consume 530 calories more per day now than we did in 1970.   As we grow older our bodies need fewer calories to keep going.   As a healthier alternative to chips, try almonds, walnuts, pecans.   Use moderation however, because once you start eating nuts, its hard to stop.   Add seeds, such as sunflower, pumpkin and sesame to your diet.

What Are Smart Ways of Cutting Back?

  1. Use smaller plates.
  2. Begin a couple of meals each week with an apple or a cup of soup.
  3. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, but limit your choices of everything else, particularly snacks.

How Many Calories Should You Eat In A Day?

The American Heart Association's rule of thumb is multiply your weight in pounds by 13 (15 if you're active).   If you want to lose weight, subtract 250 calories.

Good Fat and Bad Fat

Good fats are found in food like fish, olive oil, avocados and walnuts.   These actually improve cholesterol levels in the blood.   There are two types of bad fats; one is saturated fat found in red meat, butter and ice cream.   The other bad fats are called transfats, which are found primarily in processed foods, such as margarine and many commercially baked or fried foods.

The basic rules for eating smarter couldn't be simpler.   Watch your total calorie intake.   Burn off as many calories as you take in.   Be choosy about the foods you eat.
