-Breast Augmentation: What You Should Know
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States today. Surgery can also restore and enhance breast volume if it has decreased as a result of having children.
Most women who have their breasts enlarged receive saline-filled implants which are approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The incision for placement of your implants can be made underneath your breast, just above the crease, around the lower edge of your areola (the pigmented skin surrounding your nipple), or in your armpit. A pocket is created for the implant behind the muscle between your breast and chest wall.
Following surgery, you may wear a gauze dressing or surgical bra. There will be some swelling and discoloration that will gradually disappear. You should not engage in vigorous activities, especially raising your arms, for up to three weeks. You should be able to return to work within a week or two.
There is a great deal of scientific evidence supporting the long-term safety of breast implants. During your consultation, Dr. Flynn will discuss with you the known risks associated with implants.
If you are in the appropriate age group for mammographic screening, having breast implants will not change your recommended exam schedule. Following surgery, be sure to select a technician who has experience in mammography of augmented breasts; the presence of breast implants requires modified techniques and additional x-ray views.

Your consultation with Dr. Flynn begins with an informative video on frequently asked questions about the procedure. You then meet with Dr. Flynn in his comfortable office and discuss breast enlargement in detail. The meeting is informal but extremely helpful and informative. At this meeting with he will answer all your questions about breast enlargement. He will show you before and after photographs of surgeries he has performed. He will tell you what he feels are the most important issues regarding breast augmentation.
Determining the size of the implant is one of the most important factors in deciding to have breast enlargement. Dr. Flynn knows that if you poll women who have had this surgery, they will tell you that they are happy with the size they chose or if they were to do the surgery over again they would perhaps have gone a little larger. These are the most common answers to the question of satisfaction with size following breast enlargement surgery. On the other hand, it is also true that if an implant is chosen that is too large for your body then the result will look more like implants rather than natural breasts. For these reasons Dr. Flynn spends a great deal of time in determining the size of implant that is appropriate for you. He feels that the best way to do this is to "try on" different implant sizes. He does this in a comfortable situation where you are in a room with a large mirror where you can see your appearance with different size implants. After seventeen years of performing this surgery, he is confident that this is the best means of achieving satisfaction with breast implant size.
Breast implants are either saline or silicone. Dr. Flynn will discuss with you in detail which implant may be the most appropriate for you. An exam is performed at the time of consultation with a nurse present to aid in patient comfort and ease.
At the completion of the exam you will meet with Dr. Flynn's assistant who will discuss costs and scheduling information. The entire consultation process takes approximately one to one and half hours and is time extremely well spent. Patients leave the consultation feel excited about their new possibilities.

There are several specific questions you may wish to ask your plastic surgeon concerning: incision sites, whether you are a candidate for saline or silicone implants; and whether implant placement should be above or below the muscle.
The three most common incision areas are: (1) Periareolar - around the dark skin surrounding the nipple; (2) Transaxillary - the armpit area; and (3) Inframammary - where the breast meets the chest.
Saline implants are filled by injecting salt water (saline) from a syringe into tubing connected to the implant. The tubing is disconnected after it is filled to the appropriate size, sealing the implant and then removed from the body.
Determining the correct implant size before surgery is very important. "Trying on implants filled with varying amounts of saline and observing the result with the implants under clothing is very effective. This is an excellent way for the patient to communicate her desired size to her surgeon.
Breast augmentation can be a very rewarding experience physically and emotionally. Be in absolute agreement with your surgeon on what look and size you expect.
